Create a device passkey in Chrome, iOS, Android, or with Bitwarden

This guide shows how to create a passkey on your devices and how to store it in a manager for backup and sync. You only need to do this once per account and device or manager.

Before you begin

  • Update your browser and operating system
  • Have a device with biometrics or a device PIN
  • Optional but recommended: a password manager that supports passkeys

Create a passkey on desktop with Chrome

  1. Open Chrome and go to the site that supports passkeys.
  2. Choose Create passkey or Use passkey, then choose Create.
  3. Approve with your device PIN or a biometric prompt.
  4. When asked where to save, choose your device or your manager if offered.

Create a passkey on desktop with Edge

  1. Open Edge and visit the sign in or security settings page.
  2. Choose Create passkey and follow the prompts.
  3. Approve with Windows Hello or your PIN.

Create a passkey on iPhone and iPad

  1. Use Safari or Chrome and open the site.
  2. Choose Create passkey and confirm with Face ID or Touch ID.
  3. The passkey is stored in iCloud Keychain and syncs to your Apple devices signed into the same Apple ID.

Create a passkey on Android

  1. Use Chrome on Android and open the site.
  2. Choose Create passkey and confirm with your screen lock.
  3. The passkey is stored to your Google account for use on Android and Chrome on desktop when signed in.

Store passkeys in a manager

Managers can back up and sync passkeys across devices. Two popular options:

  • Bitwarden: enable passkey storage in Settings, then accept the prompt when creating a passkey.
  • iCloud Keychain: on Apple devices it is on by default when you are signed into iCloud.

Test your new passkey

  1. Sign out of the site.
  2. Click Use passkey on the sign in screen.
  3. Approve with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device PIN.

Troubleshooting

  • If you do not see the passkey option, update your browser.
  • If prompts do not appear, disable aggressive extensions and try again.
  • If you have multiple devices, create a passkey on each or store one in a manager.
