Passkeys basics: what, why, how on Chrome, iOS, Android

Passkeys replace passwords with a safer sign in flow. Instead of typing a password, you approve a sign in with Face ID, Touch ID, or your device PIN. This removes phishing and reused passwords from the equation.

What is a passkey

A passkey is a pair of cryptographic keys stored on your device or in a password manager. When you sign in, your device proves you are you by unlocking the private key with your biometrics or PIN. Your passkey never leaves your device.

Why passkeys are safer

  • No password to steal or reuse
  • Phishing resistant by design
  • Fast approvals with biometrics or PIN
  • Works across phones, laptops, and supported managers

Where passkeys work

  • Chrome, Edge, Safari, and modern Android and iOS
  • Password managers that support passkeys, such as Bitwarden and iCloud Keychain

How a sign in works

  1. On the sign in page, choose Use passkey.
  2. Your device asks for Face ID, Touch ID, or your PIN.
  3. Once approved, you are signed in. No password is typed or stored on the website.

Get started

  • Update your browser and OS
  • Optionally use a manager that supports passkeys
